Bringing the Christmas Spirit to Patients at the Philippine Orthopedic Center
On December 18, 2024 at the Philippine Orthopedic Center (POC), the true spirit of the Christmas season shines brightly. The hospital staff, under the guidance of their administrators, have done a great effort to bring joy and hope. This year’s theme, “Sa POC Magniningning ang Pasko: Paglilingkod sa Kapwa, Tala ni Kristo ang Gabay Mo” (“Christmas Shines at POC: Serving Others, Guided by the Star of Christ”), beautifully captures their mission.
Each ward has been transformed with unique and heartwarming Belens – traditional nativity scenes that celebrate the birth of Christ. These displays are a feast for the eyes, ranging from vibrant and colorful scenes to serene white Christmas settings. Some wards even feature whimsical Santa villages or simple, charming Christmas towns.
But the most striking element is a large lantern that illuminates each display. This lantern symbolizes the guiding light that shone on the first Christmas night, a powerful reminder for the POC staff. It represents not only the light that guided the Magi but also their own commitment to guiding their patients on their healing journey.
For many patients facing challenges, especially those in the spinal ward, these displays have brought a renewed sense of hope. The staff’s dedication demonstrates a deep understanding of their patients’ emotional needs. By creating a festive and uplifting atmosphere, they embody the light of Christ – a guiding force that inspires compassion and service.
The letter to the Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us, “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” The POC staff are living out this message by fostering a sense of community within the hospital walls. This not only boosts patient morale but also reinforces the powerful message that we are all in this together.
This festive spirit extends beyond the ward decorations. The entire Christmas celebration at the POC emphasizes unity and compassion among staff and patients. As we reflect on this season, let us remember that true joy comes from connection – through acts of kindness, shared moments of celebration, and the simple act of being there for one another. The Philippine Orthopedic Center serves as a shining example of this spirit, reminding us all that even in the face of challenges, hope and light can always be found.
