December 15, 2024 – The Philippine Orthopedic Center ushered in the festive season today with the commencement of Simbang Gabi, a cherished Filipino Christmas tradition. The celebration of the Holy Mass was led by Rev. Fr. Vincent Paul Bitong, OFMCap, who blessed the Christmas tree and Belen before the Holy Mass.

In his short catechism, Fr. Bitong shared the historical significance of the Nativity scene, recounting how St. Francis of Assisi created the first one in Greccio, Italy, in 1223. “St. Francis sought to visually represent Christ’s humble birth,” he explained, highlighting the simplicity and devotion that this tradition inspires.

Fr. Bitong also spoke about the Christmas tree, describing it as a modern symbol of hope for and anticipation of Christ’s birth. “Its evergreen nature represents immortality and peace,” he noted, adding that the star atop the tree signifies Christ as the light of the world.

The chapel was filled with patients, their companions, medical staff, and security personnel, all coming together to celebrate this meaningful occasion. Children from Bahay Mapagmahal captivated the Mass goers with their angelic voices as they sang for the Holy Mass while playing the banduria, creating a prayerful atmosphere that resonated throughout the hospital.

After the Mass, attendees enjoyed a communal sharing of bread and juice, fostering a sense of community and togetherness among all present.

This year’s Simbang Gabi at the Philippine Orthopedic Center serves as a reminder of hope and unity during this festive time. As families gather to celebrate Christmas traditions, celebrations like these play a vital role in nurturing community spirit and faith.
