Quezon City, Philippines – Members of the Philippine Capuchin Povince came together at the Transitus Chapel to honor the memory of their departed brothers and sisters during a heartfelt Holy Mass on November 2, 2024. The Mass, presided over by Provincial Minister Fr. Edgar Martinez, OFMCap., featured a poignant necrology reading by Fr. Ernesto Lagasca, OFMCap., who shared personal anecdotes about the deceased he had come to know personally, from the first missionaries to Br. Mario Mortalla, OFMCap. (+).
In his homily, Rev. Jusfer John Albert highlighted the significance of this gathering as both an invitation to and a reminder of the deep trust in God’s love and mercy that characterized the lives of those who have passed. He reflected on how, despite their human frailties, these individuals dedicated their lives to serving the Lord with unwavering goodness and faithfulness.
Before giving the final blessing to those who gathered for the Holy Mass, Fr. Edgar blessed the tombs of the deceased brothers and the lone Capuchin sister, marking a moment of reverence and remembrance within the Capuchin Fraternity. Following the Holy Eucharist, a simple meal was shared among the brothers and family members of the departed, graciously prepared by the Padre Pio Fraternity in Lipa City.
As articulated in the Constitutions of the Order, “Faith in the risen Christ sustains our hope and keeps alive our communion with brothers and sisters who are resting in the peace of Christ. United with them in an exchange of spiritual gifts, in celebration of the Eucharist and in our prayers, let us commend all the deceased to the merciful God…” (III: 51, 2).
This gathering not only commemorated those who have gone but also reinforced the bonds of faith and community within the Capuchin fraternity.
