On March 3, 2025, the Capuchins in the Philippines gathered for their Lenten Recollection and proclamation. During this time, Br. Robert San Diego, OFMCap., offered reflections to guide the brothers through the important liturgical season of Lent. Br. Bert explained that Lent is a 40-day sacred period observed by Christians as a time for prayer, penance, sacrifice, and good works in preparation for Easter. The number 40 carries rich symbolism—think of the Israelites’ 40 years in the desert, Elijah’s 40 days on the mountain, and Jonah’s 40 days in Nineveh warning the people of God’s pending judgement. Lent invites believers into a “springtime of the soul,” a season of renewal and transformation. Consider it an annual retreat, encouraging a change of heart and a deeper connection with Christ’s teachings. Through fasting, almsgiving, and self-discipline, Christians are called to free themselves from selfishness, worry, and excessive comfort. Reflecting on their Capuchin life and spiritual practices, the brothers are reminded to return to their core charisms and embrace this journey of inner renewal.

After this period of reflection, Br. Eugene Lopez, OFMCap., led the penitential services. T
