On January 29, in the Jubilee year 2025, Rev. Jusfer John Albert, OFMCap., was ordained as a priest by Most Rev. Elias Ayuban, CMF, D.D., Bishop of Cuboa. The ceremony took place at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes at 10:00 AM, attended by family, friends, and parishioners from various parishes and fraternities. This significant event marked a new chapter in Rev. Jusfer’s spiritual journey and commitment to the Holy Mother Church.
In his homily, Bishop Ayuban shared his mixed emotions about officiating his first ordination. He expressed feelings of anticipation and joy while acknowledging the natural nervousness that accompanies such a pivotal moment. He encouraged the congregation to applaud Rev. Jusfer to ease the atmosphere and create a sense of comfort.
Bishop Ayuban emphasized that while he performed the ordination, it is ultimately God who calls and ordains individuals for this sacred role. He referenced the readings from Scripture, particularly highlighting that Rev. Jusfer was called even before his birth, drawing parallels to the calling of the prophets in the Bible. “The Lord is the one who called you, Jusfer,” he affirmed, reinforcing that God would protect and strengthen him throughout his ministry.
In his reflection on the Gospel of Mark, Bishop Ayuban reminded attendees that Jesus called ordinary individuals like fishermen to follow Him. He noted that Rev. Jusfer is not defined by extraordinary qualities but by his willingness to serve God and His people. This sentiment resonates deeply in today’s context where many feel unworthy yet are called to serve.
Bishop Ayuban articulated three key attributes essential for a successful priestly vocation:
1. Trust: Just as fishermen venture into uncertain waters with faith in their catch, priests must trust in God’s guidance even when outcomes are unclear.
2. Timing: Fishermen know when to cast their nets; similarly, priests must discern when to act or remain silent in their ministry.
3. Humility: Effective ministry requires humility—priests should not seek personal recognition but rather lead others to Christ.
He concluded by encouraging Rev. Jusfer to embrace these qualities as he embarks on his ministry, assuring him of his prayers and urging him to remain accessible to all members of the community.
After the Concluding prayer, Rev. Fr. Jusfer expressed his gratitude for the support he received throughout his journey to priesthood. He thanked God for calling him to this vocation and acknowledged the guidance of the Filipino Capuchin province headed by Br. Edgar S. Martinez, ofmcap., and his councilors, Bishop Ayuban and other clergy members who played a significant role in his formation and journey.
Rev. Fr. Jusfer’s ordination is not just a personal milestone; it symbolizes hope amid concerns over declining vocations within the Church. This event serves as a reminder of God’s enduring call and provision for His Church.
As Rev. Fr. Jusfer begins his ministry among the faithful, he carries with him the prayers and support of those who gathered to witness this sacred rite—a testament to the ongoing journey of faith within the Catholic community.
