On January 24, 2025, the Philippine Orthopedic Center Chapel held its annual festival honoring the Sto. Niño, a cherished tradition celebrated every third Friday of January. Designed to encourage participation among hospital staff and devotees, the event featured a Holy Mass, a procession, and the traditional Sinulog dance.
The celebration commenced with a solemn Holy Mass presided over by Fr. Vincent Paul Bitong, OFMCap. He invited the faithful to reflect on the deeper meaning of their devotion to the Sto. Niño. In his homily, Fr. Vincent posed a thought-provoking question:
“What is the significance of our celebration of the feast of the Señor Sto. Niño in our journey, as the Sto. Niño represents hope?”
He emphasized the Sto. Niño’s role in teaching humility and trust in God, stating:
“He sees each of our hearts. May we recognize the hope He embodies for us. Let our faith remain rooted in God.”
Fr. Vincent further encouraged the faithful to surrender their lives to God, highlighting the importance of hope and faith in navigating life’s challenges.
A Prayer in Motion
After the Mass, the hospital staff participated in a vibrant procession around the blocks near the Philippine Orthopedic Center, carrying an image of the Sto. Niño adorned with flowers and prayers.
The highlight of the event was not only the Holy Mass but also the Sinulog dance—a traditional prayer-in-motion characterized by its unique steps: one step forward and two steps back—symbolizing life’s journey of faith amidst challenges. This dance traces its origins to a pre-colonial ritual known as “sinug,” performed as an offering before the image of the Sto. Niño. Historical accounts suggest that Baladhay, an adviser to Rajah Humabon, popularized this dance after joyfully performing it following his miraculous healing by the Sto. Niño. Today, both medical and non-medical staff at the hospital joyfully expressed their devotion to the Child Jesus through this vibrant dance.
A Celebration of Hope and Faith
The annual festival at the Philippine Orthopedic Center Chapel serves as more than just a religious observance; it is a powerful reminder of hope amidst life’s struggles. Fr. Vincent reminded the faithful:
“May we always entrust our lives to God and draw strength from His love as we continue our pilgrimage through life.”
This year’s celebration reinforced the enduring significance of the Sto. Niño as a symbol of faith, unity, resilience, and hope for Filipinos everywhere.
