On December 16, 2024, the Capuchin Order through Br. Edgar Martinez, OFMCap., offered Holy Mass on the 8th day Novena in honor of Nuestra Señora de Guia. This special occasion marked not just a day of worship but a heartfelt remembrance of over five decades of God’s mercy and goodness through the dedicated service of the Capuchins to the Catholic faithful in this vibrant community of Nuestra Señora de Guia in Ermita Manila.
The Capuchins first set foot in Ermita on May 31, 1903, and continued their mission until May 31, 1957. During those 54 years, they became integral to the spiritual life of the parish, guided by holy shepherds who left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. Among them were Blessed Martyrs Fr. Remigio de Papiol, OFMCap., who served as parish priest, and Br. Cipriano de Terrasa, OFMCap., whose roles included almoner, porter, sacristan, and tailor. Their unwavering commitment to serving God and the community is a testament to their faith and dedication.
During the Holy Mass led by Fr. Edgar Martinez, OFMCap., he emphasized the importance of remembering our roots. “It is good to trace the history of the Capuchins in this parish,” he stated in his homily. “We are reminded of God’s goodness through the intercession of Nuestra Señora de Guia.” Fr. Edgar’s words resonated deeply with attendees as he reflected on how this shrine has become a haven for holiness. It stands as a symbol of God’s peace (PAX) and goodness (BONUM) for both past and present generations of parishioners. He encouraged everyone to emulate the virtues exemplified by Our Lady—especially her humility. He poignantly recalled the moment of the Annunciation when Mary responded to the Archangel Gabriel: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord” (Luke 1:38). This moment serves as a powerful reminder of surrendering ourselves to God’s will.
It is essential to recognize how God worked and shaped the community’s spiritual landscape through the intercession Nuestra Señora de Guia and the labors of the Capuchins Brothers. Their influence can be seen not only in the architecture of our beloved shrine but also in the lives they touched through their service and compassion.
Let us carry forward the values instilled by our early Capuchin brothers. Their legacy is not just one of service but also an invitation for us all to live out our faith with humility and love. In honoring Nuestra Señora de Guia, we honor their memory and commit ourselves anew to serving our community with grace and dedication.
